Carpender or Carpenter Bees?

March 30, 2009 by admin

Is the proper spelling carpender or carpenter bees? I’m asking about the large black and yellow bees that drill into wood.

It’s carpenter bees. Some people keep it all one large word: carpenterbees. And these are the ones which drill into wood to create nests in which they lay eggs. A lot more information can be found in our CARPENTER BEE ARTICLE.

Carpenter bee flying around swing set

March 21, 2009 by admin

I’ve got some big carpenter bees flying around my kids swing set. It’s made of cedar and thought they didn’t like this wood. I’m afraid they might sting so we’re not going by it till they go away. What can I spray on it that will chase away the bees but is safe for the kids?

Most any carpenter bee would be attracted to something like a cedar swing set. Any time you’ve got a lot of wood with some big beams in close proximity to one another, carpenter bees will naturally be curious. This is prime nesting grounds for them and in the spring, that’s all they’re doing. Fortunately, they aren’t too aggressive. That being said, I would keep the kids away for now and at least till you’ve treated and the activity diminishes. If you are seeing any holes in the lumber, treat them with the DEMISE as described in our carpenter bee control article. If the bees are only hanging around and don’t seem to have any nests drilled yet, spray everything down with the Maxxthor. This will force them to move away as the cypermethrin will repel them since they don’t like it. Both these products are safe to use on the swing set; you just need to keep the kids away during the treatment as explained in our product safety section.

How to get rid of carpenter bees

March 18, 2009 by admin

I’m seeing carpenter bees flying around the front of my house. I don’t think they’re nesting yet but they won’t go away. How do I get rid of carpenter bees – what do I have to do to make them leave? I did have some holes in my fence but I treated them and sealed them up last year. Could these be the same bees?

Carpenter bees tend to return to areas where good nest sites can be created. If you had them nesting last year, chances are high some more will come around looking to make new nests in the same location. Do a good inspection to make sure they haven’t drilled new nest holes yet. Carpenter bees are mostly active in the spring, which is now, and this is the time to spray with some Maxxthor over the wood where they want to drill new nests. This will stop them and make them move elsewhere. If you do find new holes, be sure to treat with the Demise.

Large yellow and black bee hanging around

March 12, 2009 by admin

I’ve got a large black and yellow bee hanging around my front door. Thing is it doesn’t really go anywhere. It just kind of hangs there flying and then randomly seems to be chasing something from time to time but keeps coming back. When my Wife goes out it attacks her but doesn’t seem to sting. What is this bee doing?

You’ve got a carpenter bee or two which become very active in the spring. These bees are quite large and resemble a bumble bee. The males commonly do what you’re describing and though they’ll fly at you when you move close, they can’t sting since they don’t have a stinger! Females do have stingers so stay away from any that are in the flowers or in a nest. Carpenter bee nests will be found in wood, usually on the bottom side (the side facing the ground) and their holes will bore for several feet into wood if left untreated. Since they can cause a lot of damage, it’s best to kill off nesting ones now using the DEMISE and spray with some MAXXTHOR EC to stop new ones from creating a nest. More information about this process can be found on line in our carpenter bee control article.
