carpenter bees in facia board

July 10, 2012 by admin

Gentlemen:

I had carpenter bees in the back of my fascia board and I had an exterminator spray the area. What can I do to prevent them from returning next year? Is there any material that I can use to plug the gap between the fascia board and the aluminum siding to prevent the bees from getting behind the board in the future?

If you read through our CARPENTER BEE CONTROL article, you’ll learn there are several repellent options that can be deployed to help keep them away.

First, be sure to treat the gap with some DEMISE DUST. This dust is highly active on carpenter bees and they’ll avoid anywhere it’s applied.

Demise:  https://bugspray.com/catalog/insecticide/dust/drione-demise-dust-6-oz

Use a HAND DUSTER to apply it.

Next, seal the gap with some COPPER STUFF IT. This copper based steel wool like material is ideal for sealing any type of hole, gap, crack or crevice one can find on most homes.

And for large areas, fill excessive gaps with some PUR FOAM. This is a professional grade expanding product that’s the best on the market.

Lastly, if you still find too many bees lingering in the area or some place new around the home, spray with MAXXTHOR EC in the spring and summer. They’ll avoid the treatment and if you renew it by treating once a month, you should be able to stop them from boring new nests.

outbuilding with carpenter bees

July 2, 2012 by admin

I’m doing some repair work on a small outbuilding I own that has big carpenter bees nesting in it. There are maybe 8-10 holes. Can I work safely without getting stung? I’m replacing some of the damaged wood but it looks like there are holes or nests in some areas where I’m not doing any repairs.

If you read our CARPENTER BEE CONTROL article, you’ll learn that this wood boring bee drills through wood making nests which will hold 5-10 egg chambers. You’ll also learn the best way to treat these nests is with DEMISE DUST. So the easiest way to handle this would be to treat all the nests with some Demise and let them sit for 1-2 days thus insuring all the bees active die. Use a HAND DUSTER to make the application and the problem will be handled.

Demise:  https://bugspray.com/catalog/insecticide/dust/drione-demise-dust-6-oz

Hand Duster: bugspray.com/equipment/dusters/crusader

Now once they’re all dead, you’ll be able to go about your repair work undaunted. And after you finish the repair, I suggest you either treat the wood with some MAXXTHOR EC or NBS REPELLENT. The Maxxthor is a concentrate you’ll spray over any wood you want to protect and will have to be refreshed every few weeks when these bees are active. The NBS is longer lasting and if you mix it with paint or stain used on the building, you can expect to get a year or more of repellent action from the application.

best dust for carpenter bees

May 5, 2012 by admin

Why do you recommend Demise or Pyganic Dust rather than the cheaper Delta Dust? If I buy Delta Dust to control carpenter bees instead of Demise, do you feel it will be less effective? It seems you do not sell Delta Dust. Thank you.

In fact we sell most every dust. Our selection can be seen here:

Dusts:  https://www.bugspraycart.com/insecticide/dust

And if you read through our CARPENTER BEE article, you’ll learn why we recommend the DEMISE and PYGANIC only. The reason is simple; these are the only products that can last long enough to provide complete control. You see, Delta Dust is a true insecticidal dust. And that means the active will wear out in a few months so there won’t be anything left to work on the bees after the Deltamethrin is gone. Now since the eggs and pupae won’t hatch for many months (sometimes a year or more) following the treatment, you need something in the nests that will last long enough to insure complete control.

Now it is true that both Demise and Pyganic have some insecticide in them (pyrethrin) but this is gone in a month or so too so why do we still recommend it? Well that’s because even after the pyrethrin is  gone, these dusts are made from a base which works an insect “dehydrator” and will therefore remain active for many years. Since the mode of action for this is mechanical and not insecticidal, the pyrethrin wearing off is immaterial.

This means that any eggs or pupae that might hatch a year or so following the initial application are sure to die. And what we find when Deltamethrin Dust is used is that the bees will many times prevail and persist from year to year so it’s obvious this is not the best treatment option for the long term control of this pest. And if you’re going through all the work, why not apply the best product?

Lastly we know there are many companies suggesting Delta Dust and since it will work for a month or two, most users won’t even realize the dust they’re applying is the reason why they still have to treat from year to year where as if they had applied the Demise, the problem would be gone for good. So in summary, there is no reason to use the Delta Dust once you consider it’s shortcomings because in the end, getting rid of these bees for good is what you’re trying to accomplish and for that to happen, Demise is the clear choice.

Thanks for the great products!

Hi,

I just wanted to say thanks again for your website and information. I found it last year when combating carpenter bees on our kid’s playset. I did everything you suggested and put the NBS30 additive on the playset when I restained it. We have NO BEES this year and all the neighborhood kids have been back and playing on it like crazy!!!

I actually came back to find the link to more NBS30 as one of our neighbors asked what we used. =D

Thanks again for all your help!
