bees flying around log home

April 30, 2011 by admin

We have a log home and alot of bees that are flying around the outside. Their bottom side is completely black and shiny and I think one of them has made a hole on a log that has not been stained yet.  These logs were treated with Borate at the plant and will be staining the back side next week.  Can you tell me what these are and how to rid of them.

Thanks.

Most likely CARPENTER bees. You can read more about them in our article which highlights the products needed to both control active nests and repel them so more don’t come around. Basically you’ll need to dust existing nests with drione and then spray with MAXXTHOR EC to keep them away. And since you have a log home about to be stained, I strongly suggest you get some NBS STAIN ADDITIVE. This product is mixed with the stain and applied to work as a repellent providing long lasting residual action.

bumble bees in wood

April 26, 2011 by admin

Bumble bees in wood–

What do you recommend to kill them?

The wood is a soft wood, notably, Atlantic White Cedar–aka, Juniper,

Thank you!

It’s most likely you have carpenter bees. You can read all about them in our Carpenter Bee Control ARTICLE. There you’ll find control methods listed. Basically you’ll need to dust their holes with drione and spray the wood with MAXXTHOR EC to prevent new nests from being drilled. The process is easy and well explained in the article.

bees in live shrub

April 19, 2011 by admin

These bees are in a live shrub.   I have not read anything regarding ridding bees from live plants.   I’ve seen sprays that state “do not use on plants”.     What can be used in this case?    Thank you…

Our MAXXTHOR EC is labeled for use on trees and shrubs and works great on carpenter bees. You can also spray the NBS REPELLENT mixed with water. The Maxxthor will kill them where as the NBS is only a repellent and can’t kill anything.

gigantic bumble bees under eves

March 23, 2011 by admin

I frequently have a dozen, or so, gigantic yellow, furry, bumblebees (?) aimlessly flying under the eves of my house.  Always on the east side.  They seem harmless as they bump into each other and poop on the side of my house about a foot below the soffits. Are they harmless and what are they doing?

Actually they are carpenter bees. As our CARPENTER BEE CONTROL ARTICLE explains, they drill through wood to build nests. In these nests they stay all winter and every spring, they’ll emerge to mate and make new nests. The poop you see is from them and many times is actually the wood pulp they create when drilling though some excrement may be mixed in with it.

In our article you’ll learn the males fly around looking for females and this quest by them is never ending for a month or two. They don’t sting and for the most part are harmless. But females can sting and the damage they do can be significant. I suggest you start treating with the DEMISE DUST we have listed in our article if you want to stop this from happening as I expect it will get worse and worse each year with more returning and thus more damage being done until you stop them.
